Ruins of Kondo Isami’s Encampment

The final encampent of Kondo Isami, Commander of the Shinsengumi.

A popular location among Shinsengumi fans, this is the final site where the Commander of the Shinsengumi, Kondo Isami, and his Vice Commander Hijikata Toshizō went their separate ways.

This site was once a sake estate brewery called Nagaokaya, and at the end of the Bakumatsu Period (1853-1868), the Shinsengumi set up a temporary encampment for two days. Today, a monument commemorating Kondo and the Shinsengumi can be found at the ruins of this encampment.

Storehouse of the Akimoto Family Residence

Located on the Ruins of Kondo Isami’s Encampment, this storehouse used to be a kimono store called Mikawaya. In the late Meiji Era (1868-1912), the building was dismantled and rebuilt in its current location, and is a landmark that shows the remnants of Nagareyama’s once prosperous marketplace.
