Enma-dō Hall

Meet Enma-sama, a Buddhist god responsible for judging souls in the afterlife.
Built during the Edo Period (1603-1868), the statue of Enma (the god of Hell), which is a Nagareyama City Designated Tangible Cultural Property, is enshrined at this hall. The original building burned down in a fire in 1911, and has since been rebuilt.
Directly across from the statue of Enma lies the grave of Kaneko Ichinojo (also known as the Nezumi Kozō of Nagareyama). Kaneko’s name is well known in Kabuki theater, as a bandit who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Next to his grave lies that of his lover, Michitose, and together their graves have become a “power spot” for couples.
