Edo-Style Elegance Nestled in an Oasis of Nature
Nagareyama is a city of over 200,000 people, located less than an hour from Tokyo by train. Situated in the northwestern part of Chiba Prefecture, it preserves its rich history, with many charming local restaurants and stores lining its traditional streets.
Located along the Edogawa River, which was once one of the main water transportation routes connecting the northern Kanto regions of Japan to present-day Tokyo, Nagareyama used to be bustling with merchants, farmers, and samurai. Nagareyama is also a city that prides itself in its lush nature, featuring a historic canal lined with greenery and flowers that change color with the seasons, creating a picturesque and ever-evolving landscape.
The city is known for being the location where Shiro Mirin, a clear, delicately sweet rice wine was invented, the city proudly recognizes itself as the “birthplace of Shiro Mirin.” Nagareyama flourished due to its prosperous brewing industry, which is still preserved today through its historic storefronts and structures. The two main tourist destinations in the city are Nagareyama Honcho and Tone Unga (Tone Canal).
