Tone Unga: The Tone Canal

Nicknamed the “Oasis of the Capital City,” the Tone Unga area is reknowned for its lush, green landscapes, featuring 130 cherry blossoms and an explosion of yellow canola flowers that bloom along a historic canal each spring.

Built back in 1890 by Dutch civil engineer Anthonie Rouwenhorst Mulder, Tone Unga (Tone Canal) was the first Western engineering project to be built in Japan. Spanning 8.5 km, it once served as a vital transpotation route for moving goods between the northern Kanto regions of Japan and present-day Tokyo by boat.

Here, you can enjoy the lush forests and natural landscapes of Nagareyama, and take in the beautiful scenery that transforms with each season.
